Beginning Sunday, only customers 21 and up can buy tobacco products. There are 290 Walgreens stores across Tennessee.

Walgreen Company or simply Walgreens is an American company that operates as the second-largest pharmacy store chain in the United States behind CVS Health. It specializes in filling prescriptions, health and wellness products, health information, and photo services. As of August 31, 2018, the company operated 9,560 stores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1901. The Walgreens headquarters office is in the Chicago suburb of Deerfield, Illinois.

The company announced the new Tobacco 21 policy back in April. The change comes as several major chains are trying to reduce tobacco use among teens.

“We’ve seen positive results from other recent efforts to strengthen our policies related to tobacco sales, and believe this next step can be even more impactful to reduce its use among teens and young adults,” said Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of operations.

Walgreens began a "Card All" policy in October that requires verification of all sales of tobacco, regardless of age.
