The Indonesian government has decided to increase the tobacco excise by 12.5 percent on the average next year, the country's Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said on Thursday.

At a virtual press conference, Indrawati explained that the new tobacco excise policy took into account aspects of health and general economic conditions affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially among groups of workers and farmers.

The government will continue striving to control the consumption of tobacco products, she said, adding that the new policy will take effect in February 2021.
