New statistics published Wednesday by Eurostat, the European Union's statistical office, reveal one quarter of persons living in the EU smoke tobacco, and one in every five is passively exposed to tobacco smoke.

The new report measured the EU's consumption of tobacco products for people aged at least 15 years old. The data represents 2014 habits. It was compiled between years 2013 and 2015 and was extracted from the European Health Interview Survey.

Its findings, including those persons who smoke on an occasional basis, indicate nearly 24 percent of people in the EU smoke, and that at nearly 29 percent, the share of men who smoke is more than that of women (19.5 percent).

Tobacco consumption is one of the largest avoidable health risks in the EU: many forms of cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are linked to tobacco use, warns the report.
