Former New York City Mayor and philanthropist Michael R. Bloomberg recently announced he iscommitting additional funds to the global fight against tobacco use.

The investment is part of the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, an initiative run by Mayor Bloomberg’s foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies. Since its inception, the initiative has spread to more than 110 countries where it has helped pass evidence-based policies and saved an estimated 30 million lives from the harms of tobacco.

This progress would not have been possible without the life-saving work funded through the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use grants program. Grants provided through the initiative have closed policy gaps in low- and middle-income countries around the world. To date, 69 countries have received grants and technical support from the program and 54 countries have passed a new tobacco control law as the result of support from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Starting December 12, 2016, the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use grants program will be accepting applications for new grants to help fund organizations taking on the tobacco epidemic around the world. Organizations with demonstrated experience achieving and making progress toward policy change are encouraged to apply.

Grant proposals are open to organizations from all low- and middle- income countries and should focus on closing policy gaps using the World Health Organization’s MPOWER strategies. The MPOWER strategies support the reduction of tobacco use by:

  • Monitoring tobacco use and prevention policies
  • Protecting people from tobacco smoke
  • Offering help to quit
  • Warning about the dangers of tobacco
  • Enforcing bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship
  • Raising taxes on tobacco

Thanks to the commitment of Mayor Bloomberg and Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use grants program will continue to help organizations around the world protect vulnerable populations from the world’s leading cause of preventable death.
