5 DECEMBER 2016, GENEVA -- WHO welcomes today's announcement from Bloomberg Philanthropies on a new commitment of $360 million for the global fight against tobacco.
The new funding announced by Bloomberg Philanthropies aims to build on the success of the MPOWER package of effective tobacco control measures to Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies, Protect people from tobacco smoke, Offer help to quit tobacco use, Warn about the dangers of tobacco through pack warning labels and anti-tobacco mass media campaigns, Enforce bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, and Raise taxes on tobacco. The MPOWER measures were introduced by WHO to scale up key demand reduction measures of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) with a focus on cost-effectiveness and impact.
Promoting core demand reduction measures of the WHO FCTC, including the implementation of the WHO MPOWER package, a set of WHO measures designed to help countries implement effective interventions to reduce demand.
Since 2006 WHO has been a core partner in what remains a unique effort by Bloomberg Philanthropies to reduce deaths and disability related to tobacco use by promoting tobacco policy control in key areas.
WHO works with Bloomberg, governments and international partners to introduce and enforce laws, policy and surveillance around tobacco control. To date, the combined work has successfully supported policy work in 59 countries, reaching nearly 3.5 billion people and saving an estimated 30 million lives.
