"Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health is glad that the Government is going to put the legislation forward to implement a total ban on e-cigarettes and other new smoking products as proposed by the Chief Executive in the 2018 Policy Address. The Bill will be introduced into the Legislative Council. We press for immediate review and endorsement by the Legislative Council to protect the public health. We also propose the Government to take a bold step to formulate a goal and timeline for a total ban of smoking in order to protect the public from tobacco hazards and achieve a smoke-free Hong Kong." said Mr Antonio KWONG, COSH Chairman.

The growth of electronic cigarettes and new tobacco products including heat-not-burn tobacco products in recent years was alarming. They are marketed as trendy products attracting non-smokers, particularly the youngsters to try. Some smokers may switch to these products instead of quitting smoking. There is no safe form of tobacco. Harmful chemicals were also found in e-cigarettes and other new tobacco products bringing health risks to the public. The legislation on the total ban on these products should be completed as soon as possible to stop them from being a gateway to smoking and prevent the health hazards associated with their use.
