Local health authorities have kicked off the creation of model examples among governmental facilities on smoking control.

These facilities will take leading roles to show the city’s efforts in the establishment of anti-smoking offices, officials said on Wednesday.

Shanghai has been focusing on smoking control in public places in recent years and has successfully lowered the adult smoking rate to 19.7 percent, the lowest in the nation.

However, smoking in entertainment venues, eateries, offices and public transportation still occurs.

The city government required governmental facilities to take a leading role in smoking prevention and carry out smoking controls in all governmental facilities by 2022.
