Shanghai health inspection departments issued over 4,000 yuan ($581.96) in fines to individuals and businesses for violating the new citywide anti-smoking ordinance, reported thepaper.cn.

Starting Wednesday, Shanghai banned cigarette smoking in all indoor areas.

Four individuals in Minhang, Songjiang and Jiading districts were caught smoking and fined 50 yuan each. A shopping mall and a public bathroom in Songjiang were also fined 2,000 yuan each.

Citizen hot line 12345 received 295 calls as of 4 pm Wednesday reporting instances of indoor smoking. Most complaints occurred in restaurants, hotels and public toilets.

Health officers will continue inspecting designated areas in the following week to promote the new regulation.

The new regulation is expected to be strictly enforced, unlike its previous version, now that it allows officers to fine violators on-site.
