Officers from the Shanghai United International School Wanyuan Campus apologized to neighboring residents for its foreign teachers, who were caught smoking in front of the school gate and throwing their cigarette butts on the ground, reported the Xinmin Evening News.

Residents living at a residential compound opposite to the school complained to local media that the school's foreign teachers often smoke and litter at the entrance during their breaks or at lunch.

Parents said they are also worried about the danger of secondhand smoke and that these teachers are bad role models for their children.

School managers said that after the city's latest regulations against smoking, it prohibited teachers from smoking on campus and instructed them to go outside.

They apologized for their teachers' poor behavior and will also consider setting up smoking areas on the roadside.
