To observe the implementation of the city's new regulations against smoking in public places, Shanghai Municipal Health Promotion Committee and Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning conducted an implementation monitoring study in April.

The group monitored 1,793 venues across the city and surveyed 34,300 people, 49.5 percent of whom are staff members of the venues, and 50.5 percent are random interviewees.

The survey shows 94.9 percent of staff and 88.3 percent of interviewees are aware of the new rules.

In March and April, Shanghai Municipal Health Promotion Committee and the tobacco control law enforcement department fined 476 companies and 133 individuals totaled 1.13 million yuan ($166,269).
