Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (“COSH”) plays an active role in promoting smoke-free lifestyle through various publicity programmes. COSH has been organizing the “Quit to Win” Smoke-free Community Campaign since 2009 with encouraging results. Smoke-free messages were spread to over 20,000 citizens and more than 1,000 smokers joined the cessation contest annually.

With the continuous support of the 18 District Councils and district organizations, COSH collaborates with the School of Nursing and School of Public Health, The University of Hong Kong again to organize the 8th “Quit to Win” Smoke-free Community Campaign to motivate smokers to kick the habit. A kick-off event was held today. Officiating guests included Prof Sophia CHAN (Under Secretary for Food and Health), Dr Jeff LEE (Head of Tobacco Control Office, Department of Health), Dr William LI (Associate Professor, School of Nursing, The University of Hong Kong), Mr Antonio KWONG (COSH Chairman) and Ms Yolanda NG (COSH Vice-Chairman).

“We are honoured to have the staunch support of different sectors of the community to the “Quit to Win” Smoke-free Community Campaign. The 18 District Councils and district organizations will host a variety of community-based promotional activities while the Hong Kong Jockey Club and Link Asset Management Limited will provide venues for promotion and recruitment. Besides, COSH partners with 13 associations of the construction and transportation industries to tailor a series of smoking cessation services and promotion.” said Mr Antonio KWONG, COSH Chairman. The promotion and recruitment activities will be rolled out from June to September to disseminate smoke-free messages across the territory and encourage smokers to join the smoking cessation contest, as well as to motivate non-smokers to support their family members and friends to get rid of cigarettes.

Prof Sophia CHAN, Under Secretary for Food and Health remarked that the “Quit to Win” Smoke-free Community Campaign offered an alternative platform on smoking cessation by providing rewards and incentives, on top of the cessation clinics. The Government would continue to take a progressive and multi-pronged approach in its tobacco control policies to strive for a smoke-free Hong Kong.

Mr LIN Ngai-lui, the champion of last year’s “Quit to Win” contest, shared his successful experience in the event. Mr Lin had smoked for more than 20 years and determined to kick the habit with the aims to refrain his son and himself from the respiratory problems, as well as to have another child. After joining the contest, he received professional advice from smoking cessation counselor and set short-term goals such as stop smoking for one day to fight against the addiction. After he quitted smoking successfully, his coughing problem was relieved and his family members were really happy. Dr William LI, Associate Professor, School of Nursing, The University of Hong Kong, empowered quitters with three practical tips, including setting a quit day, gathering support from family and friends and shifting attention off smoking.

Artists C AllStar and Ms Mag LAM motivated smokers to get rid of cigarettes and adopt a smoke-free lifestyle through games. They also called upon the public to support smokers to give up the deadly addiction.

The “Quit to Win” recruitment sessions will be held in the 18 districts from now until 30 September 2017. Participants can join either the lucky draw group or smoking cessation ambassadors group to enjoy free smoking cessation counselling and get a chance to win fabulous prizes. The champion, first runner-up and second runner-up of ambassadors group will be awarded travel package to Australia, Singapore and Thailand respectively to experience the local smoke-free lifestyle, while the nominators may win supermarket coupons.
