Reception for the 35th Anniversary of Tobacco Control in Hong Kong
This year marks the 35th anniversary of tobacco control in Hong Kong as well as the 10th anniversary of indoor smoking ban. The success of tobacco control in Hong Kong is attributed to the concerted efforts of the Government and various sectors of the community. Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (COSH) has organized the Reception for the 35th Anniversary of Tobacco Control in Hong Kong to highlight the milestones in tobacco control and unite different sectors in the community to continue to strive for a smoke-free Hong Kong. Over a hundred guests and tobacco control working partners attended the event.
Officiating guests included Dr Douglas BETTECHER (Director, Department for Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases, World Health Organization), Prof Sophia CHAN (Secretary for Food and Health), Dr Constance CHAN (Director of Health) and Mr Antonio KWONG (COSH Chairman).
Since the enactment of the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance (Chapter 371) in 1982, Hong Kong has been adopting a multi-pronged and progressive approach in promoting smoke-free messages and encouraging smokers to quit smoking to counter the tobacco epidemic and minimize the harm of secondhand smoke on public health.
Dr Douglas BETTECHER (Director, Department for Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases, World Health Organization) said that the enactment of Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance was a critical first step in tobacco control in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has showed a clear commitment to work towards comprehensive and multi-pronged tobacco control policy. He wished a continued success for Hong Kong in tobacco control in the future.
Prof Sophia Chan (Secretary for Food and Health) thanked the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health, as well as partners from different sectors of the community for their support in Government's tobacco control policy. The Government will continue to strengthen the tobacco control regime, in particular to encourage young people not to smoke, to appeal to adult to quit smoking for the benefit of their next generation, and also to enhance smoking cessation services. She hoped that the people of Hong Kong could work together towards a tobacco endgame.
Mr Antonio KWONG (COSH Chairman) remarked that Hong Kong had made a great progress in tobacco control over the past 35 years. It was hoped that a long-term and comprehensive policy on tobacco control could be established. With the united force of the community, the smoking rate would lower to a single-digit percentage in one to two years and drop to 5% or below and achieve the Tobacco Endgame goal in 2027.
Over a hundred guests, government officials, academia, medical and healthcare professionals, and tobacco control working partners, smoking cessation service providers and NGOs supporting tobacco control attended the Reception. A video on the 35th Anniversary of Tobacco Control was premiered at the event to review the contributions of different sectors of the society, as well as the achievements of various effective measures in tobacco control. COSH also invited a band from Cancer Information, formed by a group of cancer patients and survivors, to perform two classic canton pop songs. The lyrics were rewritten by Prof TH LAM of The University of Hong Kong and artist Mr Albert AU to spread smoke-free messages and called upon the community to support tobacco control and strive for a smoke-free Hong Kong.
