Shanghai has made great achievements with its Healthy Shanghai Plan, part of the Healthy China scheme, local health officials said on Monday.

Some 50 government departments and bodies were involved in the establishment and execution of the plan with each city district working out plans based on their individual situations.

Scores in health awareness tests among residents have kept rising over the past 12 years. The percentage of people taking regular physical exercise has climbed to 42.8, while the smoking rate has dropped 19.7 percent, said Wu Jinglei, director of the Shanghai Health Commission.

“Healthy Shanghai is a long-term plan. The next step is to carry out evaluation and checks to set up a system with government guidance, social involvement and individual participation to further improve local health care and the public’s health awareness,” Wu said.
